THE LEGENDS "VARDAVAR, WATER SPLASHING FESTIVAL"

This is another proof of Armenians’ special attitude to water- a water festival celebrated in summer called Vardavar.

On Vardavar people drench the water on each other, they believe that water is blessed on that day and has magical properties.

With roots in pagan mythology, Vardavar was originally associated with the goddess of water, beauty, love, and fertility Astghik. ’Vard” in Armenian is ‘’rose” and “var” means “rise”. That’s where the origin of the word Vardavar comes from.

According to the legend pagan god of fire and war Vahagn, who was Astghik’s lover, was injured in the battle with a devil. While running to rescue Vahagn, Astghik hurt her feet stepping on the roses, and her blood made the roses red, and that’s why the red roses became the flowers symbolizing love. Since then, during the pilgrimage to praise her, people sing the songs, and offer her the red roses and rose water.

When Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as the state religion in 301 AD, Vardavar became part of the Armenian Apostolic Church celebrating the transfiguration of Jesus Chris each summer 98 days/14 weeks after Easter in all the provinces, big and small cities and villages of the Republic of Armenia.

It is not a coincidence that water is mentioned in Armenian beliefs and folklore for many and many times.

THE LEGENDS "PULPULAK, A PUBLIC WATER FOUNTAIN!"

There are over 1,500 pulpulaks only in Yerevan. These fountains are small memorials carved out of stone and decorated with traditional ornaments.

The most famous and the oldest Pulpulak is located in Republic Square. It is called 7 springs, as 7 people can during water at the same time. It is a piece of art that was designed by architect Spartak Kntekhtsyan in the 1960s.

THE LEGENDS "THE WATER SELLING BOY"

There was a unique tradition in Yerevan a long time ago. Little boys were selling water while singing different songs and praising the water. The most famous song to attract people for water sales was “I am selling fresh water in my little pitcher”, which is still performed by different singers.

In the center of Yerevan, one can find a “Water selling boy” bronze statue by Hovhannes Bejanyan dedicated to the former young water sellers.

While getting acquainted with Armenian beliefs and folklore, one can see many references to water. The latter has a very important role in a variety of religious and spiritual rituals in the Armenian religion. Water had wide usage and still does in the Armenian household system.
